چکیده
During the past decade, there has been a tremendous amount of research that has provided an increased understanding of the underlying pathophysiology and far-reaching clinical implications of concussion as a form of traumatic brain injury. In addition, there has been a huge surge of interest in and awareness of concussions, in part due to high-profile cases involving professional athletes. These professional athletes, however, are merely the tip of the iceberg. An estimated 144,000 pediatric and adolescent patients are treated in emergency departments nationwide for concussion,1 and this likely represents a significant underestimate of the actual incidence because many children do not seek emergency treatment for concussion. There are an estimated 3.8 million concussions due to sports annually2 and the majority of these are in Office-Based Management of Pediatric and Adolescent Concussion

Rehabilitation strategies for prolonged recovery in pediatric and adolescent concussion.
Most pediatric and adolescent concussion patients will heal within 1 month. However, 10% to 20% of adolescent concussions will take longer than 1 month to heal. In this subgroup, prolonged symptoms might include vestibular system deficits, residual neck muscle whiplash injury, exercise intolerance/dysautonomia, and memory issues. At this stage in recovery, these problems respond better to “acti...

The concept of “return-to-play” after concussion is familiar to pediatricians who routinely care for injured student-athletes. Premature return-to-play of a student-athlete who is still injured from a concussion may result in more severe and potentially long-lasting deficits.1 In contrast, “return-to-learn” plans for student-athletes have not received as much attention, perhaps because so much ...

Sports-related concussions are common among pediatric and adolescent athletes, yet a scarcity of age-specific research often has meant that practitioners use guidelines developed for collegiate or adult populations. This situation is changing, as more studies are being published about this population that bears special attention because of the immaturity of the developing brain. This article de...

Concussions and mild traumatic brain injuries have become more widely recognized and understood during the past 5 to 10 years. Earlier and more active evaluation and management of this brain injury is necessary to reduce risk to the developing child and adolescent. Pediatricians play a central role in the evaluation and management of concussions and should develop a working understanding of the...
